USENET meme
From lauriemann via james_nicoll via pecunium: what is your earliest USENET post on Google Groups?

Mine is from July 21, 1983.

God, I'm old.

The first 20 posts of mine are kind of an interesting bunch (well, I think so).

Well, it *was* called the "Usenet Fogeys Meme" originally I believe :-).

Seems like we started at much the same time.

I see one of the posts is headed, "could Spock return?"

oyyyy...

I must be having a bad day because I can't figure out how to get Google Groups to sort from oldest to newest, or what the most efficient way would be to get this info...

(BTW, just for the record, it's actually james_nicoll, no "h")

Thanks for the correction!

When you do a Google Groups search, the results are "sorted by relevance" by default. Look at the right near the top of the page for the alternate link "Sort by date". That sorts them with latest result first (date sorting is approximate, as the page warns). If there are many of results you may have to click through a lot of pages (10 pages at a time) to find the earliest.

Also, once you've located at least one post from a specific address, you can click on the "Show profile" link next to the author name. The profile for janiceg@marvin.eng.sun.com shows the earliest post from that address is in October 1991 (to alt.test).

That's what I was doing but when I got to 50 I started getting tired, and hoping that perhaps others had discovered a more efficient method...

...like this one! Exactly what I was looking for, thanks.

June 1, 1995 for me!

Sept 17, 1985. Age = 19. There are few from 85, then a hole until 1989, which is weird as I know I was posting a lot in those days of college and grad school.

It took me a while to figure out what email address I had way back then.

I definitely had public messages older than that, but not on Usenet.

Owned my own personal computer since June 1980.
