Update on Kate 10/3
Kate has basically been asleep for the last couple of days straight. She hasn't been able to eat or drink anything, and can no longer swallow pills. We are now giving her only the most critical medicines, in forms that can be absorbed through the tissues of the mouth. She is resting peacefully and we are adjusting her drugs as appropriate to keep her comfortable.

Visitors are welcome; please txt me before coming over. Kate's parents have gone home, but Sue is still here and my father is with us for a few days. The house can be quite crowded at times (at one point this morning we had ten people, including two friends, a caregiver, a nurse, a home health aide, and a notary). If you do visit, you should not expect Kate to respond to your presence, although she may open her eyes and look at you. She is not quite conscious, but not exactly unconscious either. We think it is soothing to her to have calm voices nearby.

Thanks for your help and support.

At dinner tonight, Glenn and I talked about what to say when we visit. We have a stock of stories about how wonderful it has been to know Kate over the years, what a good friend and travel companion she has always been, witty, funny, compassionate, and able to locate good food in the most improbable locations.

You are loving and wise.

Kate showed me a great thrift shop last year. I can't say that Portland was an improbable place for it, but locating good clothes and objects in addition to good food would seem to count among her superpowers. "Locating Good" -- locating it, appreciating it, sharing it with others. The yarn she found in Japan....

She has always poo-pooed that superpower, saying that anyone could get the search results she gets, but in fact search is a talent and a skill, or maybe an art, and not everyone ican practice it effectively. I'm pretty good at search, but Kate has been a master.

Agreed.

Thinking about you and Kate. Remembering the many excellent meals and conversations we have shared over the years. Always such a delight to see the two of you at conventions. She will be terribly missed by so many people. Hugs.

I have a very fond memory of dining with you and Kate (and John and I think Spike and Tom) in San Jose years ago. Kate found a Catalan restaurant that none of us locals had known about and it was excellent. It was such a nice evening. And I remember enjoying the story of your adventures in Singapore so much.

I am grateful she is comfortable and so, so sad to be losing her.

I remember how happy Kate was about getting plums to make into jam, and the yumminess of the jam she gave us.

More hugs and love in your direction.

Being able to spend time with both of you has always been one of the things we looked forward to whenever you visited this side of the pond. We are both so sorry that we will not be able to do this again. It's a consolation to us to hear that Kate is resting comfortably and I so hope it is of some consolation to you as well.
