Bear vs. Fox, Fox Loses
Whenever I visit matociquala using Firefox on the Mac (latest version, 2.0.0.9), the window hangs (spinner stops spinning, nonresponsive to clicks or keyboard). The hang only affects the current window; the application is still responsive, and the window can be closed, but I can't read the rest of the page. The message displayed at the lower left is either "Read userpics.livejournal.com" or "Read lj-toys.com" and the error console shows several instances of "Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to call method Location.toString". No problems in Safari on the same machine. Any idea what might be the cause?

ETA: Updated to 2.0.0.11 and it's still the same. But if you use a text size larger than the default, it does not hang. ETA2: During the hang the CPU utilization goes to 100%. I've tried using Firebug but I can't seem to find any way to break out of the loop, if loop it is (you have to insert the breakpoint before execution hits that point, and once the page loads the CPU is too busy to run Firebug).

It's weirder than that. If I go to that page with my text size larger than the default ('cause I'm old & don't want to wear glasses when reading the screen), then it loads just fine in Firefox. If I go there with the default text size, it hangs.

Good grief! I got the same thing.

Latest version is 2.0.0.11, not 2.0.0.9. Although I doubt that will fix it.

Thanks! Downloading it now...

...and, as we both suspected, it didn't help. (Though as apparentparadox notes above, displaying the same page with a larger text size works!)

I have this happen to me periodically with Bear's page. About once a month or so for several days.

How weird.

It's a standard LJ template.
David D. Levinedavidlevine on December 17th, 2007 06:11 am (UTC)
It seems to be some JavaScript that is going into an infinite loop and driving the CPU to 100%, so it's probably not part of the template. I've tried debugging it but there's not enough CPU left to run the debugger.

It doesn't seem to have this problem on any of the individual entry pages. Only the main journal page.

Are you, by any chance, using an lj-toy or other such thingie to track visitors to the page or some such?

There's a hit counter on the page, but it's not Java and it's not new.

Interesting.

There. I killed the HC. See if that helps.

I don't know if that fixed it for David, but it cleared the problem up for me.

Weeerd. It's just an HTML link, and it's been there all year.

(!) The internets.
David D. Levinedavidlevine on December 17th, 2007 03:30 pm (UTC)
Alas, that didn't fix it for me.

Please note that this issue didn't necessarily just start recently. It's just that when kateyule tried to visit your main journal page, Firefox hung. She doesn't usually read you, she uses Firefox, and I use Safari, so there's no telling how long the problem has existed.

(!) indeed. I used to do web development for a living and I'm baffled by this one...

Okay, another weird data point
Now I'm hanging again. I went back and tried hitting your page as I usually do, in my writer blogs tab set, and it was broken again and remained broken when I tried opening as a single window thereafter.

Re: Okay, another weird data point
Shouldn't that be "bite me, LiveJournal!"?

Ditto David on the thanks
But yeah it's really not worth sinking any more effort into. And in ref to an above post, I'm on Mac as well, so it may be some sort of Mac + Firefox + Bear(sometimes) = Hang.

You're the only person who came up in the search for this problem, I'm having the same issue on OS X 10.5 with FF 2.0.0.13.
sephethussephethus on April 8th, 2008 01:16 am (UTC)
Oh, on my own page I mean. I even tried disabling LJ toys but when I view the source, LJ-toys is embedded in stuff I can't even change.
