Are we there yet?
Still in DC, crashing at the lovely home of the extremely generous John and Peggy Rae Sapienza. Currently (3am) wide awake due to jet lag. Just snagged seats on a Monday 12/22 flight home via Chicago (better than the 11-hour marathon via Newark and Chicago that they originally booked us on, though arriving a little later). Hope the weather will allow this itinerary to actually happen. Do not expect to see our luggage until we arrive in Portland (or later), but we have obtained toothbrushes and our hosts have offered laundry facilities. I have my phone, my laptop, and my camera. Under the circumstances we are doing pretty well.

Thanks to all who have offered assistance and moral support. We have excellent friends.

Wishing you good luck on getting home with no more delays! I haven't checked Portland OR, but the Seattle forecast is...interesting!

Take care and hang in there! It's pretty intense, but gorgeous here. I'll hope for better weather for your flight back home!

Hi David,

Oh, I'm so glad you had some friends to come and get you. Being in a "home" is a good thing.

I'm really sorry about your luggage. J.C. and I did World Fantasy in D.C. in 2003, and our luggage was lost on the way there, and we only spent about 24 hours with "nothing," but it was a weird experience to have no clean clothes, no pajamas, no shampoo, etc. No fun. I'm picky about stuff like soap and shampoo.

Tell Kate I am thinking of her!

But with you two coming off of a trip to Germany, this must really feel exhausting. Hang in there! You will be home in your own bed very soon.

Saw your previous posts last night, but didn't want to clog up the communication channel without concrete assistance. But now that you and Kate are in temporary repose, here's shared frustration, concern, hope, & relief. May you enjoy this unexpected appendix to your vacation as much as possible!

Hopefully it all works--this morning we heard that PDX is closed due to an ice storm (we're monitoring as we're planning to fly out on Wednesday--that could change).

I'm so glad everything worked out. I saw your other post last night on my iPhone while we were having our own interesting adventure over to Patrick's place for his birthday.

Hi, David!

Very glad you all were able to find a friend to stay with in DC - makes all the difference in the world!

Weather.com sez more light snow tonite and thru tomorrow a.m., but tomorrow's high should be around 35. Airport is currently open and experiencing no delays.

Good luck in flight, and here's hoping travel will be easier tomorrow than today. MAX has been running shuttle buses between airport and Gateway transit center (in case that's how you were planning on getting home) cuz switches have been frozen. With the mild warming trend expected tomorrow, that should change. But a ride home would make it easier; do you have one?

Take care!
