Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated
Man, it is so weird when you hear on the radio "David Levine died yesterday"...

(The David Levine who died was the New York Review of Books caricaturist, probably the most famous living person of that name. Now the rest of us move up one step.)

I heard that on NPR going to work this morning, and thought of you. "David? Nah - couldn't be - nope, he's not 89. Whew!"

Wow, that must mess with your head. I didn't know there were any other David Levines. How common is the Levine family name?

It's one of the most common Jewish names out there. You don't want to even try to find a David Levine in New York City--there are pages and pages of Levines in the NY White pages there. Levine is the Smith or Jones of Jewish ancestry, along with Shapiro and Cohen. (I am related to a plethora of Levines myself.)

Oh boy. I just got my Jewish ancestry card revoked, huh. I should have known that.

I know the feeling
I got about a dozen phone calls and a lot of email about this.

What I can't help but wonder is if you found yourself shouting as you heard it, "I'm not dead, yet! I'm feeling much better..."

Is there a David Levine dead pool we should know about?

(Okay, that was totally morbid but it's what popped into my head.)

Did I tell you about the time that, totally by happenstance (I was looking for somebody else's grave, and had been mistakenly directed to the wrong cemetery), I found my own name on a tombstone?

And my name combination is not common. Died ten years before I was born, no relation, never heard of him.

its a good thing you look neither 83 or Dead.

My first thought was:

No one can tell if your dead on the Internet; you could be ghost writing.

:-)

If you move up a step, what rung does that put you on?
David D. Levinedavidlevine on December 31st, 2009 05:03 pm (UTC)
Well, Space Magic's Amazon.com Sales Rank is #1,057,135 in Books, so it's a pretty low rung.
