What do you get the man who has everything?
Sunday was my 49th birthday. (Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes!) It was a quiet day, but I ate some of my favorite things and hung out with my sweetie, who gave me the new Mark Knopfler CD.

I am a very lucky guy. I'm retired, which means I pretty much get to do what I want every day, and I have enough money that I can pretty much get myself whatever I want when I want it. This makes it really hard to buy presents for me or to do something "special" to celebrate a birthday. That's okay; I wouldn't have it any other way.

The day before my birthday, the TV interview I taped last week about my trip to Mars finally aired. I'm very pleased with how it came out, and you can see it below:

Today was the tech rehearsal for Ignite Portland, where I'll be giving a 5-minute version of my Mars talk (at the Bagdad Theatre next Wednesday, March 3). I don't feel quite ready but I'm sure it will go fine.

I have more news but this will have to do for now.

You come across as competent and knowledgeable (no real surprise there), but the guy interviewing you seemed at times to be a real dork. Had I been in your place, I think I would have had trouble keeping my cool.

I watched the interview the other day when you posted the link to Facebook and I remember thinking that the interviewer was vapid and clueless. Upon second viewing, my opinion stands: the guy was a jerk. You handled yourself very well, coming across as knowledgeable and professional, and a billion times smarter than the haircut on the other side of the table. Excellent interview!

Can't wait to hear the other news...whatever it may be.

In the out-takes, Dave does, in fact, deck him.

. . . reminder to self. read the other comments before commenting.

that came out one of the strangest non-sequiters I have done in years.

Happy late birthday. I just put a "gift" in the mail to you. Mind you, I didn't know about the whole birthday thing when I sent it, but I'm happy to take advantage of the timing. And no, you can't return it for something else.

Oh cool! I wonder what it is? ;-)

Ah, I didn't think the guy was so bad. I thought he asked some questions that a non-skiffy type viewer would have asked, which is always good. And YOU came off BRILLIANTLY, David. Kudos! (Love the patch, too.)

Belated birthday wishes! Great interview on your part, and I hope you pick up a new reader or two: good shot of your book cover.
