A friend asked me this weekend for some SF/fantasy recommendations. Having established that he found Perdido Street Station too bleak, I wound up recommending these:
  • Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal
  • The Native Star by M. K. Hobson
  • His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
  • Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Interesting that these are all alternate-history fantasies with a definite romance component...

I have two stock recommendations:
Since things go in and out of print so fast, a specific list may not be as useful as it seems. Find someone whose taste you can trust, and go to a good used bookstore with whatever your budget is, and see what you find.
The Hugos are a little (or more than a little) like the Oscars. A lot of things can affect the vote. But the list of nominees is a useful guide both to what's good and to who's good.

I am now on the FOURTH Temeraire novel by Naomi Novik, and am continuing to enjoy the series immensely. I described it to Randy as "Dragonriders of Pern crossed with Horatio Hornblower". Randy, as is his wont, smiled and nodded and backed away slowly just in case I became violent.

But Naomi Novik's stuff RAWKS!
