The new face of horror
I've been thinking for a while about the traditional horror creatures. Each one, as I see it, is a combination of several things that people are afraid of.

Vampire = blood + night + bats
Werewolf = wolf + night + moon
Zombie = death + disease
Frankenstein = death + electricity

Therefore, after weeks of research, I have determined that the next horrific creature -- the one that will be staring at you from all the paperback racks and movie posters in the coming decade -- is one based on two of the most common and paralyzing phobias of all:

THE PUBLIC-SPEAKING SPIDER!!!

Oh, this is so becoming a new inhabitant of the Hedge from Changeling: the Lost.

Crazy(and involving herself for the first time in, uhm, nevermind-how-many-years, fantasy role-playing)Soph

Perhaps you could draw inspiration from William Castle's movie The Tingler, in which a contrived plot forces Vincent Price to address a crowd of theatergoers: "The Tingler is loose in THIS theater! Scream! Scream for your lives!"

As you may know, this was the first film to introduce Percepto, an innovation that quickly took the world of cinema by storm. Today, pre-Percepto films seem quaint; whole generations of viewers cannot imagine watching a movie that doesn't vibrate their seats at climactic moments.

The original spider man was created by a radioactive spider (radiation = scary). The movie one was created by a recombinant DNA spider (genetic manipulation = scary).

I'm starting to think that most of our fears are overblown.

I'm thinking that today, it would probably be an Islamic spider.

I agree that most of our fears are overblown. I think that is due partly to the fact that sensational stuff sells (books, newspapers, TV ads), and partly because people want to have something larger than life to fear, because it makes the things that are really a problem and are really likely to be a threat seem smaller.

And you know, the funny thing is, most of those things we generally don't have reason to be afraid of anymore.

What we should be afraid of are the drunk drivers of the military industrial complex.
