Man, this feels weird. But it was time.

You people were no help. The voting on whether or not to lose the tail was exactly even (29 to 29). But even though grrm and autopope voted to keep the tail, in the end I had to admit that it is no longer the 1970s. And, as Kate pointed out, if I hate the new look I could always grow it back.

Lots of people asked why I was considering a change after so many years. In some ways, that is the answer: it has been a lot of years, and it's good to shake things up every now and again. And fashions do change, and even someone as fashion-blind as I am (and even living in the Specific Northwet, where we consider putting on the clean hiking boots to be "dressing up") could finally see that my look had become dated.

It's more different from the front than I'd thought it would be. It definitely feels different whenever I move my head. It will take some getting used to. But I think I like it.

I think you look excellent. And it is always good to make a change. :D
ctgstr8 on November 8th, 2011 09:27 pm (UTC)
I like your new look -- a lot!
Ulrikaakirlu on November 8th, 2011 09:32 pm (UTC)
Looks good! I don't much give a flying f about 'dated' when it comes to styles that suit you, but I agree that it's good to change it up now and again. And you'll be using way, way less shampoo. Hope you like your barber, though. You'll be seeing him with a frequency that will seem crazy often.
David D. Levinedavidlevine on November 8th, 2011 09:33 pm (UTC)
Actually, I was going in pretty frequently for beard trims, anyway, so I'll be seeing him about the same amount.

That's him in the background of the pic above, by the way.
Ulrikaakirlu on November 8th, 2011 09:56 pm (UTC)
Going to the barber...just for beard trims...? Pardon me, I'll be the one over in the corner, quietly croggling.
dd-bdd_b on November 8th, 2011 10:55 pm (UTC)
Yeah, really!
dd-bdd_b on November 8th, 2011 10:55 pm (UTC)
Ah, that's relevant. One of many reasons I don't consider changing my style is that anything else is a lot more trouble and costs a lot more. But if you're going in anyway, the time aspect largely goes away (most of the time being travel).

When I've cut off ponytails in the past, I've noticed how much cooler my neck feels. And the first few times I'd put on a shirt, I'd start to reach for the ponytail to pull it out.

Actually, I think the shorn look works on you.
the laughing leaping waterminnehaha on November 8th, 2011 10:48 pm (UTC)
Yes, I did that too! One adapts surprisingly quickly.

K. [David, you're a good looking man with or without a pony tail]

The only real problem will be telling you from Jim Hines at a distance ;>
David D. Levinedavidlevine on November 8th, 2011 10:05 pm (UTC)
I'm the one with the beard and glasses.
Twilighttwilight2000 on November 8th, 2011 10:12 pm (UTC)

I had mine cut short over the summer. I'm not thinking of growing it again for some time.
scarlettinascarlettina on November 8th, 2011 10:16 pm (UTC)
I think you look perfectly splendid.
cascade_writerscascade_writers on November 8th, 2011 10:38 pm (UTC)
Very nice look for you!
Smofbabesmofbabe on November 8th, 2011 10:55 pm (UTC)
You brave thing! Looks good.

Don't be surprised if you still reach for the ponytail for some time - after my nose surgeries when I had to wear contact lenses for a few months, I still found myself reaching up to adjust my glasses :->

it's time / it grows
Yes to both.
One of the times I shaved, after one of my longest unshaven stretches (i.e., perhaps a couple of decades) it was because I realized I didn't know what my face looked like, so I shaved for half a year.
And as for "it grows", I'm known for some of that too . . .

You look great, and bonus! You look younger as well.

I missed the voting, but I think the result is rather flattering!

I just thought I'd mention I'm going to try to grow a ponytail now
So there.

There's one available now.

I'm a Keeper of the Tail myself, but I like your photo. Hair and beard go well, nice balance.
threeoutsidethreeoutside on November 9th, 2011 01:36 pm (UTC)
Yup, I like it, too. (Consistent with my vote, I might add, just for the record, not as though I am ever going to run for office but you never know.) Ahem.

Being a Boomer (and no doubt much older than you), I am tired of teh ponytails on men. Tell the truth, I prefer no facial hair, too. However, I loved both or all of it in the 70s and 80s and into the 90s. (My dear Husband had beard & moustache, but short hair.)(OK, almost no hair at all.)

You look very handsome and au courant, dood. Congrats!
kzmillerkzmiller on November 10th, 2011 07:22 am (UTC)
Excellent! Much applause, though I liked the tail too.

LOVE it! (Just catching up after a bit of an LJ hiatus.)
